Because "thread lift" describes two quite different treatments. Barbed lifting threads placed across the lower face are a substantial procedure and priced accordingly. Smooth collagen-stimulating threads placed in a small area are far simpler, and clinics quoting a few hundred dollars are almost always describing those. No, and the name does a lot of unearned work. A surgical facelift removes excess tissue and repositions the deeper layers, lasting a decade or more. A thread lift repositions tissue using absorbable sutures and lasts twelve to eighteen months. The lift is modest — real, but modest. If you are expecting surgical results you will be disappointed, and we would rather tell you that than take the booking.

Twelve to eighteen months for most patients. The threads themselves dissolve within four to six months; what sustains the result afterwards is the collagen your body lays down along the thread path. That is also why the effect fades gradually rather than dropping suddenly.

Polydioxanone — the same absorbable suture material surgeons have used internally for decades. It is fully broken down by the body, which is why the effect is temporary and why nothing permanent is left behind.

Barbed threads have tiny cogs along their length that grip tissue, so they can be anchored and used to physically lift. Smooth threads have no barbs and cannot lift anything — they are placed to stimulate collagen and improve texture. Both are PDO, they cost very different amounts, and confusing the two is the main reason people find thread lift pricing so inconsistent.

Local anaesthetic is used, so the placement itself is tolerable — you feel pulling and pressure rather than pain. Afterwards expect tightness, soreness and an odd sensation when you move your face for a week or two. Most patients describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful.

More than most non-surgical treatments. Expect swelling and bruising for one to two weeks, tightness and pulling sensations for two to three, and possible small dimples or puckering at the entry points that settle over days. Plan three weeks clear of anything important.

The specific ones worth knowing: visible dimpling or puckering where a thread has gripped unevenly, asymmetry, a thread becoming palpable or extruding through the skin, and infection at the entry points. Most are correctable but they are more common than with injectables. Rarely, nerve irritation occurs and resolves over weeks. Technique and thread placement determine most of this.

The best candidates have mild to moderate laxity, reasonable skin quality, and are not yet ready for surgery. Threads reposition tissue — they need something to lift. If your skin is heavily lax or there is significant excess, threads will not hold it and a surgical consultation is the honest recommendation. If the problem is lost volume rather than descent, filler or Sculptra is the better tool.

Commonly, and they work better in combination than alone. Filler restores lost volume, threads reposition what has descended, and neuromodulator manages movement — three different problems. Immediately, and then it changes. The lift is visible on the day, partially masked by swelling over the first fortnight, and settles into its true position at around three to four weeks. Not straightforwardly. Threads can sometimes be removed if a problem arises early, particularly if they are palpable or extruding, but it is not a clean reversal in the way dissolving filler is. This is one of the reasons candidacy assessment matters more here than with injectables.

For two to three weeks: no facial massage, no dental work if avoidable, no sleeping on your side, no strenuous exercise, and no exaggerated facial expressions or wide yawning. The threads need time to integrate before the tissue is disturbed.
