What is Botox?

What is Botox,
and how does it work?

Botox is a purified neuromodulator (botulinum toxin type A) injected in tiny amounts to temporarily relax the specific muscles that create expression lines. When those muscles soften, the skin above them creases less — so forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet look smoother while your natural expression stays intact.

Botox works on dynamic lines — the ones that appear when you move. It is measured in units, and the number of units depends on the area treated and your muscle strength, which is why Botox is priced per unit rather than as a flat fee. At our Carlsbad studio the same product is also used to slim the jawline, ease TMJ-related clenching, lift the brow, flip the lip and reduce underarm sweating.

Botox is a medical treatment. Candidacy, dosing and injection points are decided by your provider at consultation — never from a fixed template.

How Botox works

How Botox
actually works

Botox works by temporarily interrupting the signal between nerve and muscle, so the muscle that folds your skin into a line simply stops contracting. Here is what happens, step by step.

01

A tiny dose, precisely placed

Botox is injected in small units directly into the specific muscle creating the line — not into the skin itself.

02

The nerve signal pauses

Botox temporarily blocks the chemical signal that tells that muscle to contract.

03

The muscle relaxes

With the muscle at rest, the skin above it stops folding — so the line softens over the next several days.

04

It gradually wears off

The effect fades over about 3–4 months as normal nerve signalling returns, which is why Botox is repeated.

Botox timeline, day by day

Your provider tailors your Botox dose to your muscle strength and your calendar — ask about starting conservatively if it is your first time.

Day 0 · Treatment

Injections take 10–15 minutes. Tiny raised bumps settle within 15–30 minutes and you return to your day.

Day 3–7 · Onset

Botox begins working. Lines start softening as the treated muscles relax.

Week 2 · Peak

Full effect. This is when we review your result and fine-tune if any area needs a touch-up.

Month 3–4 · Wears off

The effect gradually fades as muscle movement returns — time to rebook to maintain your result.

Why per-unit pricing

You pay for units,
not a package

Botox is dosed in units, and every face needs a different number. Charging per unit means you pay for exactly what you need — a strong forehead may take 20 units while a lip flip takes four. We map your units and quote the total before we start, so nothing is a surprise at checkout.

Technique over product

The product is the same.
The injector isn't.

Every clinic buys the same Botox. What differs is the mapping — which muscles, how deep, how many units, and how the areas balance against each other. That judgment is why we keep injecting dermatology-led, with a Medical Director who has taught neuromodulator technique to practitioners nationally.

Botox vs Dysport, fillers & Sculptra

Botox vs Dysport fillers and Sculptra

Botox and Dysport are both botulinum toxin type A — they relax the muscle that creates a line. Fillers and Sculptra do the opposite job: they restore volume. Many patients combine them. Here's how each compares, and what it's best for.

Botox preparation & aftercare

How to prep & recover

Start 4 weeks ahead

Before your Botox appointment

  • Book at least 2 weeks before any event — Botox needs that long to reach full effect.
  • If medically appropriate and cleared by your physician, avoid blood thinners, NSAIDs, fish oil and alcohol for 24–48 hours to reduce bruising.
  • Tell us about all medications, supplements and any neuromuscular conditions.
  • Let us know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding — Botox is not offered in these cases.
  • Arrive with clean skin and no makeup on the areas being treated.

Botox aftercare

  • Stay upright for about 4 hours — no lying down or face-down massage.
  • Do not rub, press or massage the treated areas for 24 hours.
  • Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Avoid heat — sauna, hot tub, hot yoga — for 24 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours to reduce bruising.
  • Expect results in 3–7 days; we'll review you at two weeks.
Good to know

Botox questions, answered

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified neuromodulator (botulinum toxin type A) injected in small units to temporarily relax the muscles that create expression lines, softening forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet while preserving natural movement.

How long does Botox last?

Botox typically lasts 3–4 months. The effect fades gradually as normal muscle movement returns, which is why most patients rebook every three to four months to maintain their result.

How long does Botox take to work?

Botox starts working in 3–7 days and reaches full effect at about two weeks. We schedule a two-week review so we can see your result at peak and fine-tune if needed.

How much does Botox cost?

At our Carlsbad med spa, Botox is $14 per unit, discounted to $11.90 per unit for VIP members. Your total depends on the areas treated and the units required, and we quote it before treatment. Flexible financing options are available.

How many units of Botox do I need for my forehead?

Forehead lines typically take 10–20 units and frown lines (the "11's") usually take 20–25 units. At $14 per unit, that is roughly $140–$280 for the forehead. Your exact dose is mapped at consultation.

Does Botox hurt?

Most patients describe Botox as a quick pinch. The needles are very fine and the whole appointment takes about 10–15 minutes; topical numbing is available if you'd prefer it.

Is Botox safe?

Botox has been used cosmetically for over two decades and is FDA-approved for several cosmetic and medical uses. As with any medical treatment, safety depends on correct dosing and placement by a qualified provider, and on a full review of your medical history at consultation.

What should you not do after Botox?

For the first 24 hours, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas, strenuous exercise, facials, and heat such as saunas or hot tubs. Stay upright for about four hours after your appointment.

How long after Botox can you lie down?

Stay upright for about four hours after your Botox appointment. This helps keep the product where it was placed while it settles.

Can you exercise after Botox?

Wait about 24 hours before strenuous exercise. Raised blood flow and facial flushing immediately after treatment can affect how the product settles.

Botox vs Dysport — what's the difference?

Both are botulinum toxin type A. Dysport tends to take effect slightly faster (2–5 days versus 3–7) and spreads a little more, which can suit larger areas like the forehead, while Botox stays more localized for precise work. Both typically last 3–4 months, and we offer both at our Carlsbad studio.

Does Botox help TMJ and jaw clenching?

Masseter Botox can ease clenching-related tension and slim a heavy or square jawline. It typically takes 40–60 units and results build over several weeks. Suitability is assessed at consultation.

How often can you get Botox?

Most patients treat every three to four months as the effect wears off. Treating too frequently isn't recommended, and your provider will advise the right interval for you.

Botox vs Xeomin — what's the difference?

Both are botulinum toxin type A with a similar onset (3–7 days) and duration (3–4 months). Xeomin is formulated without the complexing proteins found in Botox. Glow Theory currently offers Botox and Dysport rather than Xeomin.

Botox vs Daxxify — which lasts longer?

Daxxify has been reported to last up to six months versus about three to four for Botox, with a slightly faster onset. Glow Theory currently offers Botox and Dysport; your provider can discuss whether a longer-acting option is worth considering.

Book your Botox consultation

See your best skin Carlsbad

Book a consultation and we'll map your Botox units, quote your total upfront, and build a plan around your face and your calendar. Consultations are $100 for new and returning patients and include an in-depth skin analysis — the fee goes toward whatever treatment or products you choose on the day.

Worried about looking frozen?

We dose to soften lines while keeping your expression. If you'd rather start conservatively, Baby Botox uses micro-doses and we can always add more at your two-week review.

Not sure how many units you need?

That's what the consultation is for. We map your muscles, tell you the unit count and quote your total before anything is injected.
