How laser hair removal works

Laser Hair Removal Carlsbad —
reduction, honestly explained

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment inside the hair. Light is absorbed by melanin in the shaft, travels down to the follicle and heats it enough to disable it. That single mechanism explains almost everything about the treatment — including its limits.

It explains why you need a course rather than one session: only follicles in the active growth phase can be affected, and at any given moment just a fraction of your hair is in it. It explains why we call it permanent reduction rather than removal. And it explains why it does not work on white, grey or unpigmented hair — there is no melanin to absorb the light. We will tell you that at consultation rather than after you have paid for six sessions.

Most people booking laser hair removal Carlsbad have either been shaving the same area for a decade or are dealing with recurrent ingrown hairs. Both are excellent reasons. We use Sciton’s Forever Bare BBL, which delivers energy through repeated low-fluence passes as the handpiece moves — more comfortable than older stamping devices, and gentler on the skin surface, which matters most in deeper skin tones.

Where we treat

Areas we treat
and what they cost

Areas are priced by size rather than by name, so a chin costs the same as an upper lip and a Brazilian costs the same as a full back. Every price below is published.

Book a Consultation

Face & upper lip

Chin, lip, sideburns

Laser facial hair removal is our most requested small area, and often the most life-changing — facial hair is the one people spend the most time managing. Face is treated more frequently than body, roughly every four weeks.

X-Small $75 · Small $110

Underarms

The classic starting point

Small, fast and among the most responsive areas because the hair is typically dense and dark. Many patients start here to see whether the treatment works for them before committing to a larger area.

Small $110 · 6 for $627

Bikini & Brazilian

Bikini line through full Brazilian

The bikini line is a medium area; a full Brazilian is large. Both respond well. Comfort matters most here, which is where the motion-based delivery genuinely helps.

Medium $140 · Large $210

Legs

Half legs or full legs

The biggest time saver of any area, and the one where a package of six is most obviously worth it against a lifetime of shaving.

Large $210 · X-Large $250

Back & chest

Laser hair removal for men

Back, chest and shoulders are the areas men ask about most. Coarse, dense hair usually responds well, though it often needs more sessions than finer hair does.

Medium $140 · Large $210

Ingrown-prone areas

Neck, beard line, bikini

For anyone who gets recurrent ingrown hairs or razor bumps, reducing the hair itself is more effective than any shaving technique. This is a common reason men with curly hair start treatment.

How laser hair removal works

Why it takes
six sessions, not one

Every hair on your body is at a different point in its growth cycle right now. That single fact determines how this treatment has to be delivered — and it is why anyone promising results in one session is not being straight with you.

01

Light absorbed by hair pigment

Melanin inside the hair shaft absorbs the light and converts it to heat. More pigment means more absorption, which is why dark hair responds best and unpigmented hair does not respond at all.

02

Heat travels to the follicle

The heat conducts down the shaft to the follicle and the structures that regenerate hair. Reach the right temperature and the follicle is disabled permanently.

03

Only growing follicles respond

This only works on follicles in the anagen growth phase, and only a fraction of your hair is there at any moment. Dormant follicles are untouched — they are not connected to a shaft to conduct heat down.

04

Each session catches a new fraction

Spacing sessions four to six weeks apart lets a new group of follicles cycle into growth. Six to eight sessions covers enough of the cycle to produce lasting reduction.

From 10 minutes for a small area

Your laser hair removal appointment,
start to finish

Skin typing and test patch

Fitzpatrick type confirmed, hair colour assessed and a test patch performed at your first visit to establish safe settings.

Shave and mark

The area is checked — you should arrive shaved 12 to 24 hours prior — and mapped so coverage is consistent between sessions.

The treatment pass

The handpiece glides across the area delivering repeated low-energy pulses. A small area takes 10 minutes; full legs takes closer to an hour.

Cool down and SPF

Cooling gel and sunscreen applied, written aftercare given, and your next session booked four to six weeks out.

Between sessions

Every laser hair removal before and after photo on this page is an actual Glow Theory patient in Carlsbad, photographed in the same position and lighting and unretouched, and always at the same point in the growth cycle so the comparison is fair. Results vary with hair colour and thickness, skin type, the area treated and hormonal factors — and laser does not affect unpigmented hair at all.

What to expect

Laser hair removal timeline, session by session

Do not wax, pluck or thread between sessions. Shaving is fine and expected — the follicle has to be there for the next session to work.

Day 0 · Treatment

Area looks pink and feels warm like mild sunburn for a few hours. No downtime.

Weeks 1–3 · Shedding

Treated hairs appear to grow, then shed. This is expulsion, not regrowth — a good sign.

Sessions 2–3 · Thinning

Noticeably reduced density and finer regrowth. Shaving becomes less frequent.

Sessions 4–6 · Clearing

The clearest change. Patchy regrowth as the remaining follicles are progressively caught.

After the course · Maintenance

Occasional maintenance once or twice a year, especially where hormones influence growth.

Laser hair removal for dark skin

Deeper skin was historically
treated badly or refused

The old problem was simple: the laser targets melanin, and it could not distinguish pigment in the hair from pigment in the skin. That meant burns and hyperpigmentation, and it is why many people with deeper skin were turned away or, worse, treated on the wrong settings. Modern delivery changes the equation — Forever Bare BBL spreads energy across repeated low-fluence passes rather than single high-energy shots. Combined with correct skin typing, conservative settings and a test patch, treatment is safe across the Fitzpatrick range. We would rather test and go slowly than treat you like everyone else.

Where laser cannot help

It does not work
on unpigmented hair

The laser needs melanin to absorb the light. White, grey and most blonde and red hair does not contain enough, so the follicle never gets hot enough to be affected. No device changes this — it is physics, not marketing. If your hair is unpigmented we will tell you at consultation and point you toward electrolysis, which works differently and does treat it. Six paid sessions that could never have worked is not a result anyone should sell.

Laser vs the alternatives

Laser hair removal vs waxing, shaving and electrolysis

Laser is not the right answer for everyone — it depends on your hair colour and how much you want to spend upfront against over years. Here is the honest comparison, including the option that works when laser cannot.

How to prep & recover

Shave, do not wax

Before your laser hair removal session

  • No waxing, plucking, threading or epilating for four weeks — the follicle must be present.
  • Shave the area 12 to 24 hours before your appointment.
  • No sun exposure or self-tanner for two to four weeks beforehand.
  • Arrive with clean skin — no deodorant, lotion or makeup on the treatment area.

  • Expect a test patch at your first visit before a full treatment.

Laser hair removal aftercare

  • Expect pink, warm skin like mild sunburn for a few hours.
  • Avoid saunas, hot tubs, hot yoga and heavy sweating for 48 hours.
  • Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ on any exposed treated area, daily.
  • Treated hairs will appear to grow then shed over 1–3 weeks. This is normal.
  • Shave between sessions if you want — but never wax, pluck or thread.
  • Contact us for blistering, spreading redness or any sign of a burn.

Laser hair removal questions, answered

How much does laser hair removal cost in Carlsbad?

Laser hair removal costs $75 to $250 per treatment at Glow Theory in Carlsbad depending on area size — $75 for X-Small areas like the chin or upper lip, $110 Small, $140 Medium, $210 Large and $250 X-Large. Packages of six save 5%, and members save 20% on packages of six: $360 X-Small up to $1,200 X-Large.

How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?

Six to eight for most areas, spaced four to six weeks apart. The reason is biology rather than sales: laser only affects follicles in the active growth phase, and at any moment only a fraction of your hair is in it. Each session catches a different fraction. This is why we price packages of six.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

It is permanent hair reduction rather than permanent removal — that is the honest and the FDA-recognised wording. Treated follicles are destroyed and do not regrow. However, dormant follicles can activate later, particularly with hormonal changes, so most people have an occasional maintenance session once or twice a year after completing a course.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

It stings rather than hurts — most people describe each pulse as a hot elastic band snap. The motion-based Forever Bare BBL delivery is noticeably more comfortable than older stamping devices because it spreads the energy across repeated low-fluence passes rather than delivering it in single high-energy shots. Underarms and bikini are the most sensitive areas; legs and arms are easy.

Does laser hair removal work on dark skin?

Yes, with the right device and settings — but it genuinely matters who is doing it. Older lasers could not distinguish hair pigment from skin pigment, which is why darker skin was historically treated badly or refused. Modern delivery and correctly adjusted settings make treatment safe across the Fitzpatrick range. We assess skin type, use conservative settings and test patch first. If we did not think it was safe for your skin, we would say so.

Does laser hair removal work on blonde, grey or red hair?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something. The laser targets melanin — the pigment in the hair. White, grey and most blonde and red hair contains too little to absorb the energy, so the follicle is never heated enough to be affected. We will tell you at consultation rather than after six paid sessions. Electrolysis is the option that does work on unpigmented hair.

What is Forever Bare BBL?

Forever Bare BBL is Sciton’s laser hair removal technology. Instead of one high-energy pulse per spot, it delivers a series of lower-energy pulses while the handpiece moves across the skin. The follicle still reaches the temperature needed, but the surface heats more evenly — which is what makes it more comfortable and safer across a wider range of skin tones.

Can I shave before laser hair removal?

You should. Shave the area 12 to 24 hours before your appointment so the follicle is intact below the surface but nothing is left above it to burn. What you must not do is wax, pluck, thread or epilate for four weeks beforehand — those remove the follicle, which is the target, and the session is wasted.

Is laser hair removal for men different?

The technique is the same but the expectations differ. Male body hair is typically coarser and denser, particularly on the back, chest and shoulders, which often means more sessions than a comparable area on a woman. Beard-line work is approached carefully because most men want reduction and shape rather than removal.

When can I not have laser hair removal?

We avoid treatment on tanned or recently sun-exposed skin, during pregnancy, within six months of isotretinoin, over active infections or cold sores in the area, and where photosensitising medication is being taken. Recent waxing or plucking means rescheduling — the follicle needs to be there.

What is the downtime?

None. The area looks slightly pink and feels warm like mild sunburn for a few hours. Treated hairs then appear to grow over the following one to three weeks before shedding — that is the follicle expelling them, not regrowth. Avoid heat, heavy sweating and sun for 48 hours.

When will I see results?

You will notice reduced density after two or three sessions. The clearest change usually lands between sessions four and six. Because each session only catches follicles in the growth phase, results accumulate rather than appearing all at once.

How far apart should sessions be?

Four to six weeks for the face, six to eight for the body, matching the growth cycle in each area. Coming sooner does not speed things up — there simply are not enough follicles back in the active phase yet, and you would be paying for a session that cannot work.

Can I have laser hair removal in summer?

You can, but sun exposure is the complication. Treated skin is more sensitive, and tanned skin raises the risk of burns and pigment changes. If you are on the beach regularly through summer, starting a course in autumn is easier on both you and the result.

Is a package of six worth it?

Yes, because six is what most areas actually need. A package of six saves 5%, and members save 20% — full legs drop from $1,500 for six single sessions to $1,200 for a member package. If you are committing to a course, membership pays for itself on a single large area.

Book your laser hair removal consultation

Stop shaving the same patch Carlsbad

Book a consultation and we will assess your skin type and hair colour, perform a test patch, and tell you honestly whether laser will work for you. From $75 per treatment, currently up to $75 off. Consultations are $100 for new and returning patients and include an in-depth skin analysis — the fee goes toward whatever treatment or products you choose on the day.

Been told your skin is too dark to treat?

That advice is out of date, though the caution behind it was not. We assess your Fitzpatrick type, use conservative settings and test patch first — and we will be honest if we do not think it is safe for you.

Not sure your hair will respond?

If it is white, grey or very fair, it will not, and we will say so at consultation rather than sell you a course. Electrolysis is the treatment that works on unpigmented hair.
